UCL awarded the Race Equality Charter Mark

Thu, 13/08/2015 - 11:25

Earlier this year, 21 universities applied for the Race Equality Charter Mark. Today we are pleased to announce that UCL is one of only eight to have been successful. This makes us among the first universities ever to receive award following end of trial for Race Equality Charter.

The initiative, launched by Equality Challenge Unit in this academic year, follows in the footsteps of ECU’s renowned Athena SWAN charter, and recognises excellence in advancing racial equality in higher education.

Coming to UCL in September? Here's some tips...

I hadn’t expected to spend four years studying at UCL. There was a time when I hadn’t expected to go to university; I’d been told that because I was autistic, people like me shouldn’t or couldn’t or wouldn’t go, because universities wouldn’t want us. Happily, I learnt that that was wrong when I was about 15, and I turned out to be good enough at maths that I later looked into doing a maths degree at a variety of UK universities.

Solidarity with the Tube Strike!

Anyone trying to use London public transport today will have noticed that the Tube isn’t running and it’s difficult to get anywhere as a result. I sympathise with passengers affected; I woke up at 6am in order to reliably reach UCLU in plenty of time to prepare for an important 10am meeting. But while I would have quite liked not to have spent double my usual commute time on the bus this morning, the fact remains that I fully support the Tube strike because of the dangerous conditions that London Underground wants to force on Tube workers.

WO Weekly Blog: Training, Training, Training.

It’s the beginning of August and I’ve been in office for two whole weeks now. Well, I say that I’ve been ‘in office’ - in reality, I haven’t spent that much time physically in the office at all. Last Friday, the entire sabb team went off on a team-building weekend; then on Tuesday, five of us went to NUS Lead & Change in Warwick; and, finally, on Friday, I was at full time Women’s Officer training here in London, at NUS HQ.

Sat, 01/08/2015 - 07:00

As you may well know, in December 2014, UCL and the IoE merged, to create London’s biggest higher education institution. Ever since then, everyone at IoESU and UCLU have been working away, preparing for this day - they day we officially merge and become a super union!

You say goodbye, and we say hello

Wed, 15/07/2015 - 16:00

It’s another 12 months over and we are saying goodbye to our 2014/15 sabbatical officers. Sabeeh, Hajera, Hannah, Lukmaan, both Omars, Harkiran, Mariana, Leah and Annie have all been excellent officers this year and facilitated wins for students across a wide range of fronts. From compensation for students with housing issues to supporting students with the Meat Free Monday initiative, this year has been one to remember.
