UCLU’s Annual Members' Meeting (AMM) will take place from 6pm on Tuesday 21 February in the UCL Bloomsbury Theatre. Registration starts at 5:30pm. Please arrive early as there is limited capacity in the theatre.
It is your opportunity to find out about, and take part in, the democratic running of the Union.
At the AMM you will have the chance to discuss your views with other members, vote on the motions proposed, and quiz the people who you've elected to run your Union. If there is something in your Union that you want changed, or an issue that you feel should be discussed, any member of the Union may submit a motion (see here for more information). All students automatically become a member of the Union when they register with UCL.
The agenda and papers are posted here, and you'll be able to download them, and bring them along. Motions for discussion are available here.
What is an AMM?
The Annual Members' Meeting is held so that any member of the Union has the opportunity to vote on motions relating to something really important, when it’s necessary to be able to say that a large number of the students agree or disagree with something.
What do I do?
You can participate in the debate and vote on any motions. You are also there to question the elected officers and hold them to account. After listening to what the people proposing and opposing the motions say you can question them on anything you are unsure about. Remember, the people who are really involved in these issues often forget that most people don’t know much about some of what they say and so there will often be a number of people with the same queries as you.
Don’t panic or freak out, speak out!
How does it work?
You will be given the opportunity to ask any of the elected officers present questions about any area of the Union as you wish. The Annual Report & Accounts will be presented and there will be some motions to discuss.
Please note that a summary of the Union’s accounts is available in the Annual Report & Accounts. If you would like a printed copy of the Annual Report & Accounts, please contact the Democracy & Communications Officer to obtain a copy.
When someone proposes a motion, that person will stand up and give a speech outlining their reasons for wanting the motion to be passed. The motion will contain three types of information:
This Union notes… (FACTS)
These are points which are factual information.
This Union believes… (OPINIONS)
Believes set out the Union’s position on the issue and in the future these can be pointed out in any debate as the students feelings.
This Union resolves/mandates… (ACTIONS)
These are action points that the Union/officers must carry out.
After the proposition speech there will be an opportunity for someone to speak in opposition. Rounds of speeches will continue at the discretion of the Chair. The proposition and opposition speeches needed to be equally balanced.
The Chair will then open discussion to the floor.
At the end of the debate, the Chair will call for a vote and the matter is decided.
