“Last term I was deeply depressed and had extremely low self esteem. I began volunteering on a regular basis at the start of this term and I have seen a tremendous difference in myself. I am so much happier and more secure in myself.”

People often associate volunteering with helping other people. However, research suggests that it is also benefits the volunteer too. Our surveys of UCL students certainly show that they develop new skills, make new social contacts, and broaden their horizons.

Students also tell us how volunteering has improved their mental health. 75% of UCL student volunteers said their happiness and general well-being had improved because of their involvement, and 84% said that they felt more confident in their own abilities.

Other studies have found similar results. For example, a review of research by Volunteering England found that volunteering can reduce the incidence of depression, stress and psychological distress, amongst other health benefits.

The Volunteering Services Unit

UCL has one of the largest volunteering departments of any university in the UK. We have a wide range of opportunities on offer, and can cater for most interests. Examples include:

  • Sports coaching with young people
  • Befriending elderly people
  • Fundraising for good causes
  • Arts & Crafts activities
  • Translation into community languages
  • Work with refugees and asylum seekers
  • Campaigning for social change
  • Environmental conservation
  • Museums & Heritage

We have over 250 different activities on offer, including lots of one-off events if you don’t want to make a long term commitment. Furthermore, if you’ve got an idea for your own community project, we can help you turn that idea into reality.

“Volunteering is a great way to take a break from studies and revision. For me it is a way of breaking up my time, and being able to get away from final year stresses, where I can contribute my time towards something useful and inspiring.” Jaine, Information Management for Business, volunteer with Pro-Active London.

“Volunteering gave me the opportunity to meet so many different people, try out so many different things and my whole university experience was greatly enhanced by getting involved with the VSU.” Lauren, English, Project Leader on Homelessness Survey Project.
