Harry studied Humanities BA (Hons) at UCL between 2004 and 2007, during which time her volunteered for the Environment Council and the Camden Federation of Private Tenants.

Where are you currently working/volunteering, and what are you doing?
I am currently working at Ofgem (the energy market regulators) where I help develop environmental and energy policies to maintain energy supply and transform modes of energy generation.

What useful skills and experiences did you gain as a volunteer when you were at UCL?
The work was largely data collection and research. It was rewarding to work as part of a team and produce a useful outcome. It was useful in terms of gaining experience about how a network system exists when you want to either get some information or distribute some information to a targeted audience. Building relationships with key stakeholders who can help you with this is needed in order to deliver your eventual outcome.

How has volunteering helped you in your career so far?

Volunteering has helped me as I have gone on to do an MSc in Environmental Policy and Regulation and I now work in this field.

What would you say to UCL students considering whether or not to volunteer?
I would suggest that prospective volunteers think carefully about what they want to get from the experience (in terms of the timing of the work, the type of work, the sector the work is in). Once you are sure on this you can offer a much more stable commitment to those who you volunteer for.
