Get involved in...representing students

Wed, 29/08/2007 - 11:11

UCL Union is run by democratically elected students, who are directly accountable to their peers, i.e. you. Anyone can stand to be elected and become part of the team dedicated to making student life at UCL the best it can possibly be.

What's involved in being a student representative?
There are a number of different types of roles that you can be elected to, ranging from a full-time officer to being a representative in your Faculty. Full-time Officers receive a salary during their year in the job, whilst other positions are required to fit their commitments in around their studies.

One

Become a full-time officer

A Full-time Officer is a position which students need to take a year out of their studies to fulfil the role. This could be during or at the end of their studies.

Each Full-time Officer has distinct areas of responsibility:
• Democracy & Communications Officer

  • • Education & Campaigns Officer

• Finance & Services Officer
• Medical & Postgraduates Officer
• Student Activities Officer
• Welfare Officer

Two

Become a Part-time Officer

Part-time Officers are members of the UCL Union Council and chair the respective Forum.

Part-time Officers:
Activities Officer; Community Officer; Education Officer; Ethics & Environment Officer; Equality Officer; International Students' Officer; LGBT Officer; Postgraduate Students' Officer; RUMS Officer; SSEES Officer; Student Media Officer; Union Chair; Women's Officer.

Four

Become a Faculty Rep

Faculty Representatives are elected to represent their fellow students to the faculty management and decision making committees. They are also members of the UCL Union Council.
StARs

Become a StAR:
Student Academic Representative

StARs are elected to represent students’ views on their experience to UCL. StARs sit on various committees at a course, faculty and University level, at which they act as the voice of students, ensuring that UCL takes into account the needs of students in its decision making processes. StARs achieve this through liaising with UCL Union and University staff to resolve issues.

First Year Rep

The First Year Rep is elected to represent the needs of first year students to the Union and is a member of UCL Union Council.
